The Alabaster stone

The word 'Alabaster' comes from Alabastra, city of the ancient Egypt.
From the antiquity it was used for sculpture, recipients to conserve perfumes and essences like thus also for large windows by its capacity to spread the light and its decorative character.

Its composition is dehydrated calcium sulphate, its hardness oscillates from 2 to 3 of the Mohr scale and its specific weight is 2.75gr/cm cubical. The alabaster is a crystalline variety of the plaster or plaster stone.

The two basic characteristics that cause that the alabaster is appreciated are: that it is translcent, (the Churches of the Valley of the Ebro instead of crystals had worked alabaster slabs) and which the so small size of the grain allows that it is the only stone of the world where a pin can be worked.
